Located between San Francisco and San Jose, Palo Alto (pop. 68,000) is a model of innovation, sustainability, and creativity and the heart of Silicon Valley. A full-service city, Palo Alto has an FY 2023-24 operating budget of $1 billion and 1,063 staff. The Planning and Development Services Department includes 57 team members and a $26 million budget. The Assistant Director will lead the Current and Long-Range Planning functions and serve as a technical expert on land use development.

Palo Alto seeks a community development professional who excels in a dynamic setting and is energized by high standards. The ideal candidate will be a big-picture thinker who also displays a keen eye for critical details. The individual selected will be knowledgeable regarding industry best practices and familiar with contemporary approaches to urban planning. Competitive candidates will bring a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience, including five (5) years of management/supervisory experience and a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.

Salary range is $169,062 - $253,753, supplemented by competitive benefits.
