UNC Health Care Director Internal Communications - Integrated Communications in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Job Summary:

  • Lead and direct the internal communications team for UNC Health and the UNC School of Medicine (SOM).The Director of Internal Communications reports to the Executive Director of Integrated Communications. The Internal Communications team represents the voice of all internal audiences and helps connect teammates to the organization’s purpose, strategy, and culture. UNC Health has 40,000 teammates across the state and more than 2,000 providers.

  • Establish and execute an internal communications strategy in conjunction with senior managers.

  • Ensure organizational initiatives and projects are successfully communicated to employees and stakeholders

  • Plan, edit and write content for a variety of internal communication mediums, such as team intranet sites and regular E-newsletters for various target audiences.

Description of Job Responsibilities:

  1. Develop an annual internal communications plan in conjunction with his / her team and the Executive Director of Integrated Communications. Develops internal communication plans throughout the year to support programs and special initiatives;

  2. Develop and grow internal communication programs in a fast-growing, complex organization with a keen understanding of internal communications best practices. Serve as a trusted advisor for senior leaders and executives on a wide-range of communications issues. The director serves as a key counselor to Executive Director of Integrated Communications and the Chief Communications & Marketing officer;

  3. Lead company-wide and School of Medicine teammate and provider communications, engaging teammates across North Carolina. Aligns communication outreach with senior leadership and established strategy to facilitate employee engagement, and retention by connecting / engaging all employees to company strategy, mission, and culture;

  4. Lead organizational-wide change and develop ways to measure the true impact of that change. The team is highly collaborative and thrives in a data-driven culture. The director will develop KPI’s to measure the impact of internal communications efforts.

  5. Other duties as assigned.

Other Information

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as journalism, public relations or corporate communications.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Ten (10) years of combined experience in internal / corporate communications for large organizations or corporations with demonstrated expertise and comfort working collaboratively with communications and marketing teams.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Requirements:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with healthcare and hospital systems and the current healthcare landscape of the Triangle, the State of North Carolina.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, working quickly under pressure and tight deadlines. Must have a demonstrated ability to apply data and research findings to internal communications and content development efforts;

  • Demonstrated success planning and managing complex communication projects from start to finish, and working effectively in cross-functional teams both internal and external. Ability to manage partner relationships with vendors is crucial;

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate/collaborate effectively with all levels and positions of the organization;

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and content management systems (CMS);

  • Ability to work and function in a complex environment comprised of medical, corporate and academic settings all working together concurrently;

  • Willing to seek and introduce new tactics and strategies to all areas of responsibility both strategically and tactically (working “outside the box”);

  • Work collaboratively across department functions including marketing and branding, marketing technology, consumer insights, integrated communications and community engagement

  • Supports the strategic vision of the organization.

Key Skills:

  • Employ feedback from stakeholders to adjust content accordingly

  • Work closely with senior management and external communications teams in response to crisis situations

  • Draft messages or scripts from senior executives for presentation to teammates

Writing, Editing & Proofreading - Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills and an ability to source stories from teammates and all levels of management are critical.

Presentation Skills - The Director of Internal Communications must have strong presentation skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate sensitivity to an organization’s goals and values and be able to communicate them to teammates.

Interpersonal Skills - The Director of Internal Communications must possess strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
