UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN Power Systems Technician in Austin, Texas

Installs, maintains, tests, adjusts, and calibrates electrical utility power meters and circuit protective devices including digital protective relays, kilowatthour meters, power circuit breakers, data acquisition and telemetry equipment, etc. Repairs and modifies control circuitry and auxiliary devices. Designs and documents electronic retrofits of outdated equipment. Accuracy expected in all phases of work performed. Perform related duties as assigned.Monitors and records all electrical system operating data and makes recommended corrective procedures. Prepares detail specifications and reviews bid tabulations of required equipment. Works with power generator protective devices and controls such as excitation controls and governors. Works and troubleshoots low and medium voltage variable frequency drives. Documents and plans work performed on power transformers.Receives, and maintains inventory of materials, supplies, and tools. Maintains records of work performed. Completes work orders using automated maintenance program systems. Work around hazardous materials and energy sources, including distribution level voltage sources.Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas. Works in conjunction with trades or craft personnel in support of systems within power plant, chilling stations, utility tunnels or other underground utilities. Experience with test sets standard with industry. Use of tools of the trade, and standard office equipment. May perform elevated work, including utilizing scaffolding and personnel lifts. May work in confined spaces.Informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies and takes appropriate action. Identifies, reports, and corrects safety hazards as necessary. Oversees and verifies compliance with standards of workmanship and safety. May be required to perform safety audits and inspections. May be required to train other personnel in safety and job-related categories.Must be able to read, interpret, and update equipment and system drawings. Must be proficient in use of a personal computer (Word, Excel, etc.). Review and update manuals, check sheets, procedures, and preventive maintenance instructions with best practice information. Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Follow all University and UEM safety policies and procedures, take required safety training, and identify and report safety hazards. Perform work tasks in a safe manner, wear the proper personal protective equipment, and report near misses and incidents.Abide by Utilities and Energy Management's set of core values: Safety, Respect, Integrity, Reliability, Teamwork, and Excellence. Work effectively from a remote office or on campus. Drive university vehicle or cart. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4. Perform other related functions as assigned.
